When In Rome…

While a frequently seen face on the British stage and television, actress Lindsay Duncan has yet to tackle Britain’s greatest TV hero, The Doctor.  Until now.  Later in 2009, she will star as Adelaide, the Doctor’s assistant (and maybe future companion?) in the second of this year’s Doctor Who specials, following this Easter’s ‘Planet of the Dead’.

Perhaps best known for her role as Servilia Caepionis on HBO’s ‘Rome’, she has also appeared in the award-winning TV movie ‘Longford’ and as Rose Harbinson on ‘Starter for 10.’   Said Duncan,”I’m thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the Doctor Who team.”.

Outgoing Who mastermind Russell Davies has described her character Adelaide as  “the Doctor’s most strong-minded companion yet.”  That’s a pretty big set of shoes to fill and Who fans everywhere can judge for themselves later this year.  servilia_rome.jpg

Always nice to see a capable actress cast as a companion for the Doctor… even if her run ends up being just a single story.
