Bionic Woman to be Next Companion?

Michelle Ryan The Daily Mail is reporting that actress Michelle Ryan has been cast as the Doctor’s companion in the upcoming Easter special, Planet of the Dead. Ryan may be best known as the star of the 2007 remake of The Bionic Woman (or not, seeing as the show got canned…). Ryan previously auditioned to be Billie Piper’s replacement but lost out to Freema Agyeman. What do you guys think?

Cute, but I’d much prefer to see someone like Catherine Tate, whose strength was character and acting rather than being eye-candy with a bit of attitude.

And if she lost to Freema, who I still don’t like, I’m not hopeful.

I fear that they may have made a mistake in having both a new Doctor and a new Assistant at the same time. But then, I also fear that they are trying to make the Doctor “funkier” and more youth-focused with whats-his-name, rather than keeping the sense of millenia-old experience that the older Eccleston and Tennant could pull off.

    I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Ryan is a more talented actress than that godawful BIONIC WOMAN update ever showed. But the important thing to remember here is that she’s only the companion for this special. Everything we’ve heard so far indicates that the new companion proper (as in, for Series 5 and beyond) won’t be introduced in PLANET OF THE DEAD. Is it possible that Ryan’s character will end up returning? Sure. But for now, it’s just a one off.

Besides, there were plenty of reservations regarding Billie, Freema, Catherine, Kylie, etc., and all acquitted themselves fairly well. Give the girl a chance.

Although they do have a habit of casting people they’ve worked with before and she was in Jekyll, Steven Moffatt’s last thingamijig. Although I think she’ll be a one-off and quite a good one actually.

“Funnyman Lee Evans has also been signed up to play a character named Malcolm whose life becomes connected to the Doctor’s under extraordinary circumstances.”

‘Noma Dumezweni returns as Captain Erisa Magambo - last seen helping to save the world in the episode Turn Left. Executive producer and writer Russell T Davies said: “Michelle is one of the most sought after young actors in the country and we are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team. As always the script is being kept strictly under wraps however we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who’s going to have a huge impact on the Doctor.”‘

    Thought I’d add that

According to reports, Freema Agyeman is all set for her final turn (at least, during the Tennant era) as Martha Jones in one of the upcoming specials. I personally believe this will be her last go-round in the series period, short of some SCHOOL REUNION-type or multi-Doctor story years from now. The girl is simply too busy, and it’s clear that her tenure on WHO was either A)her way of launching her career or B)never intended by Davies and company to be a long one (or both). I’ve always assumed that Martha was the WHO equivalent of a “rebound” relationship, to reassure audiences that the Doctor wasn’t going to just fall in love with every female companion he meets in this new series. She’ll always be overshadowed by Rose and Donna (my favorite companion in many, many years), but I’ll miss Martha nonetheless.

We’ll I only saw her in Bionic woman, and in my opinion she is a fairly talented actress. I’ll enjoy watching her as a companion, no matter how short lived the job may be.

Depending upon the character she plays in POTD (if abbreviating, should I say “POTD 2009″, to avoid confusion with a Pertwee-Daleks story?), I would kind of like to see Ryan return as the regular companion in 2010. It makes sense to bring an established character in to help smooth the new Doctor’s transition, and she deserves a chance to replace “star of the failed BIONIC WOMAN remake” at the top of her resume. Besides, she’s absolutely stunning, and I’d be lying if I said that doesn’t win her a point or two with this WHO fan.

    POTD SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

The next great DOCTOR WHO monsters are the Tritovore, which are described as half-man, half-fly.

A BBC Source (to Digital Spy): “They are disgusting and will last long in the memory… Everyone remembers the Daleks and the Cyberman, but not a lot else if they’re honest. The Tritovore will change that. Scriptwriters are confident they’ll make a huge impact.”

    I’m excited!!!

I know this isn’t really on topic, but in my mind they are linked- I first saw Doctor Who on PBS because it came on after Red Dwarf on Saturday nights, and this Easter we are not only getting the new Doctor Who special, but we’re (finally!) getting new Red Dwarf! I’m so exited!

I’d really like to see Alex Kingston back as River Song.

  • 11 dkrouskop // Feb 8, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Didn’t River Song refer to her Doctor as being older? Wouldn’t make much sense that she knew the 11th Doctor then, unless Matt Smith plans on playing the part for 30 years.

Of course, River Song could be Susan Foreman.

I’d hit it. For a one time companion, it’s a-ok with me!
