Doctor Who Series Four Soundtrack Released…
Today saw the official release of Murry Gold’s music for Series Four of Doctor Who. Now I love music. I play more music than television. Indeed I’m listening to my Pandora Radio Channel right now. And I love soundtracks. John Williams was a household name when I was a kid. I listened to Danny Elfman while my classmates were listening to Warrant. I would get to know the scores as well as the films themselves so much so that I could actually quote what was being said in the film just by listening to the music (and with that talent I still wonder why I’m not married…). So of course I had to pick up this album.
The album features the Doctor Who theme of course, which is the same one that appeared on the Series Three CD. It then goes into the playful “A Noble Girl About Town” which features heavily in Partners in Crime. For me this was one of the more memorable pieces of music form Series Four. Admittedly a lot of what is on this album has been used before, just slightly different arrangements. There’s a new arrangement for the Doctor’s theme which has a large choir singing. Rose’s theme appears briefly, I don’t recall hearing Martha’s at all though. I was disappointed though in that my two most favorite snippets of music from Series Four were not included on the soundtrack. The first was the Roman March whenever Lucius Petrus Dextrus showed up. I couldn’t wait for the CD to come out so I could make that one of my ringtones! Anyway… the other piece of music that I really loved was form what I felt was one of the strongest moments in Series Four. It was from The Doctor’s Daughter when he’s trying to explain to Jenny and Donna that being a Timelord is more than just having two hearts. During this part you can hear a reprise of “This Is Gallifrey” being played on an oboe (I’m pretty sure, but could be wrong…). It was very haunting and sad. Guess that tune could make deep people happy. And while I enjoyed listening to this soundtrack (indeed I listened to it three times in a row tonight) there was just nothing that really stuck out for me. The first CD had “Boe” which I felt wa a really cool piece of music though too short. Fortunately Gold did a longer version and added a choir mix to it for the second CD. That and along with “This Is Gallifrey” made it my favorite of the three CDs so far. So that’s my little stream-of-consciousness review. If you like Murray’s music then you should enjoy the CD just fine.
