The Real ‘Journey’s End’
It was officially announced recently on the BBC website that after the 2009 special episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ David Tennant will officially step down as Doctor Who, paving the way for 11th Doctor.
Seemingly the departure doesn’t come as the result of any job dissatisfaction. Said Tennant, “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the TARDIS console forever and I fear that if I don’t take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will. You would be prising the TARDIS key out of my cold dead hand. This show has been so special to me, I don’t want to outstay my welcome.”
After three superb seasons as the Time Lord, Tennant has only five hours of adventure left, starting with the Christmas special and four specials to air next year, the last of which will introduce the new Doctor.
Russell T Davies Executive Producer of Doctor Who comments “I’ve been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it’s not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left! After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we’re planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching!”
As to who the new Doctor will be, speculation runs rampant but no word has been leaked yet.

Well, that rather bites. Tennant is awesome as The Doctor. At the same time though, this does seem like an appropriate time to switch over; The whole Rose thing is finally wrapped up and over, Martha’s moved on, Donna’s permanently out of commision, things are wrapped up rather nicely. It’s been a while- I’ll have to go back and check, but I beleive whatserface from Silence in the Library knew Tennant as The Doctor, so I’m wondering if we’ll see her again during the specials in the upcoming year. . .

It’s a shame to see Tennant go so early, I would most definatly enjoy 2 or even 3 more seasons with him without getting bored.

Tennant did a magnificent job as the Doctor, and he will be missed. I do think there is one other story arc that really needs to be wrapped up before his/Davies’ departure, and that’s Gallifrey. Even if it means just giving us a more detailed account of the Time War, they should wrap up that whole angle in some way so that Moffatt doesn’t inherit it for his tenure. Historically, outgoing producers have always tried not to leave the new guy with a major story arc to resolve. I’m betting we’ll find out the whole truth (which, IMO, includes the revelation that Gallifrey is still around). As for Tennant’s replacement, one has to wonder if the “next Doctor” in this year’s Christmas special will turn out to be exactly who he claims to be!

I’m gonna have to agree with Jorn on the Silence in the Library issue, I was really looking forward to seeing that resolve itself. Though in regards to yolt13’s comment I think I’d almost prefer Moffat’s take on the Time War and bringing Gallifrey back

My roomie and I have come to the conclusion that the Time Lords have hidden Gallifrey from the doctor “just to screw with him”, and they’ll all laugh about it later.

Someone needs to get a petition or something.
Even if he only did one more series for the fans I would be extremely happy. They could make it the best series yet and go out with a big bang…
It just doesn’t seem right to leave it wherever it is now. :/
