Amy Winehouse as The Doctor?!

Yeah, RTD is seriously out of his gourd. The Telegraph has an interview with outgoing showrunner, Russell T Davies who said that although the Doctor should always be played by a man, he wouldn’t mind seeing Amy Winehouse as the last of the Timelords. I mean seriously…. I don’t think a week goes by in which I don’t see some story about Winehouse and her drug addictions and stuff popping up online. I mean I can see Daleks and Cybermen running away from her in fear not becuase she’s the Doctor, but because she’s just FREAKIN’ SCARY AS HELL!! What do you guys think?

I think RTD may have completely lost it if he meant what he said. I have no idea how well she acts so I won’t pass judgement on that, but… hell just look at the woman! She looks like she’d pass out from all the running they do.

I thought it was bad when she was rumoured to be playing the Rani, but the Doctor? It’s a scary day when someone thinks about that as a serious casting option.

He said that despite the grumbles of hardcore fans, some of whom have questioned the show’s emotional element, he has no regrets.

“They are not real fandom, though, they are a core of mostly men who like to complain,” he said. “Fandom is bigger and richer than that, and they are only about 1,000 people who give everyone else a bad name and build their life around a show.”

    RTD is a jackass.

There was a public access version of Dr. Who from about 15-20 years ago that was absolutely brilliant. It starred a woman and captured the essence of the series perfectly. I’d like to find that if I could.

When I get it scanned, I’ve got The Sun’s editorial cartoon on the subject…

“she was rumoured to be playing the Rani”

    This might be a hint.

As much as I’d like to see the Rani come back, I don’t think Amy is it. Maybe she could be the Master’s daughter? Hey, if the Doctor could have a kid….

    Hoping this works this way…

Guess not. Ah, well. Above is the link to the editorial cartoon about it…

    @ Kern:
Fixed that for ya. In the future use the < and > instead of [ and ].

Davies won’t be the first departing WHO producer to say things that leave fans scratching their heads. He is undoubtedly feeling a great sense of liberation now that he’s essentially free of the responsibility of steering this beloved franchise, so he probably feels free to say whatever he wants. Good for him, though I doubt any producer would ever seriously consider the terminally unreliable Winehouse for a major commitment to their project. He was likely just making a joke he knew would raise some ire among his critics.

As for Winehouse being tapped for the Rani, again very doubtful. Even if Moffatt likes her, he’s unlikely to saddle himself with such a potential liability with all eyes on him and his handling of this successful property. There are plenty of great, proven actresses out there who could play the Rani. Why risk such a high profile role on an unproven actress with a long history of being too stoned or sick to meet her commitments? Frankly, her popularity has waned so much since her personal issues overpowered her (already overrated) musical achievments in the press that there hardly seems sufficient justification to get her anyway. Aside from those “Leave Britney alone!”-type weirdos who spend their whole lives worrying about the personal fortunes of flash-in-the-pan celebrities, who would really be excited about such a casting announcement? And if she blew it, the damage she did to both the character of the Rani and the Steven Moffatt era could be fatal.

The thought of Amy as the Doctor really just made my head hurt….

    : scratches head :

Just why *is* everybody wanting to see the Rani, anyways? Why not The Meddling Monk or Romana?

If they did have a female doctor I think Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter Stargate:SG1) would make a good one.

Speaking as someone from across the pond, all we ever hear of Amy Winehouse here in Canada is her personal problems (and they are many). If they ended up casting her as any character in the series, they’ll have to deal with whatever consequences there are.

I’m more in agreement with yolt13 that it was probably just RTD yanking our collective chains, but still it’s a pretty scary thought.

I suppose that if they want to keep returning the major villans in the next series, they’d probably have to do something like the Rani or Romana. There aren’t that many really huge enemies left to treat, though I like the idea of The Meddling Monk…

Yeah, sounds like RTD is… trolling!? Hilarious. Credit to the man.

Unless he’s dead serious… in which case I’m glad he’s leaving.

My God how stupid is that. Ever one knows that Time Lords Cant Change there Gender only there Apperacne when they Regenerate. Meaning they cant go from being a Man to being a woman when they regnerate. RTD is just trying to Get attention. Attention Whore.
