Hey, guys, I want to keep this discussion spoiler free for those who have yet to see it. I mean I had no idea they were going to do what they did. I’d like others to make the same discovery.

Ah, such a wonderful, long, intricately worded and researched review Richard.
Understandable though, you wouldn’t want to spoil THAT.

Wow… I was simply not expecting events to transpire like they did this week… It’s going to be a long, anxious wait to the next episode!
Thrilling episode though, packed full of emotion and drama. I just don’t know what to expect next week!

Just tell me, cuz i saw last weeks preview. Should I have seen Torchwood Season 2 or that Sarah Jane show before i watch this? Am I going to miss something If i havent?
9 yolt13 // Jun 29, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Mike,
Not really. There are a couple of Torchwood Season 2 spoilers in the episode, and it helps to know who Luke and Mr. Smith are from the Sarah Jane Adventures. But a basic knowledge of the characters involved is enough to enjoy this episode, which might be the greatest single episode in the entire history of DR. WHO. That said, you should catch Torchwood Season 2 and Sarah Jane anyway, because the former is a marked improvement over its first year, and the latter is old-fashioned WHO-style fun.

Just watched it again, and I stand by my earlier comment - best single episode in DR. WHO history, period. To go into detail would be to spoil it, but the combination of familiar faces, breathtaking action, spectacular visuals, in-jokes and references, emotional moments, and edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers all adds up to a perfect example of why DR. WHO is the greatest science fiction adventure show ever produced. Major kudos to Russell Davies for his fantastic script, of course, but I also think Graeme Harper and Murray Gold deserve to be honored for their stellar contributions. Harper has proven time and time again in this new series and with the topnotch 80s stories CAVES OF ANDROZANI and REVELATION OF THE DALEKS that he is one of the greatest WHO directors of all time. And even those fans who aren’t usually impressed by Gold’s rich scores will have to concede that his work on THE STOLEN EARTH is nothing short of amazing.

I have but one question…WHERE THE HELL is Sally Sparrow?
RTD really needs to get his priorities straight. I mean, come on.
12 Neon // Jun 30, 2008 at 2:06 am
I hope NONE of you actually think (SPOILER…)
More spoilage…
13 Shadow Chaser // Jun 30, 2008 at 2:53 am

@ Richard
That preview isn’t that spoilery, just the villain doing his talky thing that all villains do yknow

Hard to believe in an episode so loaded with bits from both this and the calssic DR. WHO, someone could be upset that the story doesn’t include a non-companion like Sally Sparrow. If Sally Sparrow is a companion proper, than so is every other minor, single-story character that has ever helped the Doctor, from cavemen to H.G Wells to Cathica from Satellite Five. Just because someone is particularly cute, resourceful, or popular doesn’t make them a companion. Fighting alien monsters is the exception, not the norm, for Miss Sparrow. She has no more place in this story than any other one-off supporting player. Hell, Adam is more deserving of a mention here than the admittedly lovely and charming Sally Sparrow. Just my opinion…
16 Mentoc // Jun 30, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I really hope you didn’t think I was serious about Sally Sparrow…
17 Richard Kirsch // Jun 30, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I’m serious about sally Sparrow…
Bathe her and bring her to me…
18 yolt13 // Jun 30, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Didn’t know, Mentoc. Some fans are genuinely in lust with the character, and others just can’t resist finding something wrong with even the best episodes. Apologies for taking your comment literally!
19 Richard Kirsch // Jun 30, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Yolt13: Some fans are genuinely in lust with the character…
Yeah, but no need to mention any names right? RIGHT? heh-heh…
Actually I feel that to bring Sally back would cheapen the character somehow. Know what I mean?
20 Mentoc // Jun 30, 2008 at 9:10 pm
If they brought her back, they would have to bring back whatsisname…Elton (thanks, wikipedia!) from Love and Monsters.I find it sad that I couldn’t remember his name, but anyway…
Anyone else find it weird that this discussion has shifted from the new episode to old stuff so quickly? I think we need a forum or something…(wink wink)
We really need that next episode, or we’ll all explode with anticipation…

22 Mukau // Jul 1, 2008 at 7:02 am
I almost crapped myself when Davros was shown.
23 daniel // Jul 1, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Thanks for the spoiler….
Actually, I figured out he was going to be shown before the first episode of the season. It was either going to be him or The Rani. Cain’t wait to get to this episode when it is finally shown here in the US.
24 Kern // Jul 1, 2008 at 5:13 pm
That last Dalek shot is really, really bothering me…
25 Mark // Jul 2, 2008 at 1:13 am
I think it’s interesting, Daniel (and it’s not just you, there are thousands of people who say this), that you jumped to the Rani so quickly. She was only in two stories, and one of them was pants. The other one was good but not amazing. But a lot of people keep saying “I’ll bet they bring back the Rani.” Don’t you remember how awful her last appearance was?
26 daniel // Jul 2, 2008 at 8:35 am
I thought it might be her because she could prove to be a good match for The Doctor, especially the way the series is going. A little flirtation along with the danger could go a long way. Actually she wasn’t my first thought - I first went to Davros.
27 yolt13 // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:02 am
Personally, I liked both of the Rani’s previous stories. And if you were going to use the “only in one good story, and the last one wasn’t it” rationale, Davros would have stayed dead after DESTINY OF THE DALEKS!:) Anyway, the problem with bringing back the Rani is that so few new fans know who she is, and they haven’t even mentioned her in this new series. Having her show up would have little dramatic impact with anyone but us old-timers, especially in a season already loaded with big reveals and twists like this one… unless, of course, she turned out to be someone we already know, in disguise. The shock of having any human revealed as a Time Lord, especially if that human went from being a close ally to a recurring nemesis in future stories, might be just enough to overcome any “Who?” factor with newer fans.
28 Kern // Jul 2, 2008 at 4:06 pm
*Slight Spoiler*
Can you image the Doctor checking his phone after the call?
‘You have six billion missed calls’.
29 Kern // Jul 2, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Sorry, sorry - sudden thought -
What if Donna wasn’t the Rani - But another Time Lady whos’ name starts with R?
30 Mark // Jul 3, 2008 at 9:20 am
Yolt, you’re right about Destiny of the Daleks, and Resurrection doesn’t fare much better - but you’re forgetting that the last two Dalek/Davros stories in the classic series were *fantastic*.
31 daniel // Jul 3, 2008 at 1:25 pm
You know who I would like to see return? The Black Guardian. He was part of this huge arc if I remember right with the promise to return. I didn’t catch much of the 7th Doctor’s adventures, so I don’t know if he ever actually did.
32 Mark // Jul 3, 2008 at 10:24 pm
No, he didn’t. I haven’t seen either of his arcs so I can’t really say whether it’d be cool to see him again.
33 rwun // Jul 4, 2008 at 1:07 am
I dunno, I really liked the black guardian/white guardian dynamic, as well as the whole arc with the Eternals and having an evil companion. But I don’t know how the guardians would interact with the new series. Did they leave the Universe like the Eternals did? What was their link to the Doctor? If they were fading and Ephemeral way back when, how would the new series explain their continued Existence? Having them back would be kinda like having Rassilon come back or finding out the Doctor’s name– cool, but I don’t know if I’d actually want that much of the whoniverse be better defined.
