The Unicorn and the Wasp Discussion…
This week the Doctor and Donna get to meet famous mystery writer Agatha Christie. And it just so happens that there is a murder mystery to solve just like in her novels! The story begins with Professor Peach and Reverend Golightly arriving at the same time to the estate of Lady Eddison. Lady Eddison is throwing a tea party for Agatha Christie who is the guest of honor. While alone in the library doing a bit of research, Professor Peach is murdered by a giant wasp with a lead pipe. Seriously, only in Doctor Who could something like this be done. The Doctor and Donna arrive to “invite” themselves with the psychic paper and soon ae trying to unravel a mystery with Agatha Christie.
This was a fun episode and a bit of a departure in style for Doctor Who. It was also the first episode filmed for the fourth series, but doesn’t seem like it. The writers insert the Doctor and Donna into an actual historical event, the event being Agatha Christie’s ten day disappearance. The Doctor states that Christie disappears that very night and only her car is found by a lake the next day. She turns up ten days later at a hotel with no memory of what had happened. Now although this did happen in real life, the writer did play a little loose with history. Christie actually disappeared in December of that year and her car was found by a chalk pit. However the ending of the episode wouldn’t work if it were by a chalk pit. So we’ll let it slide. This episode was also put together to make it kind of feel like it was one of the gazillion Agatha Christie television adaptations made by the BBC, although it’s paced much faster. Throughout the episode they give you subtle clues as to who the culprit is. I’m not any good at solving mysteries (indeed I only beat my ex at Clue once…) though I did get one. One of the characters says the word “toilet” which I thought was odd. I was under the assumption that people in “posh” society would say “Water Closet” or “WC” for short. Turns out I was right about that one. Everything else… nope. I was way off. But like I said, it was fun and that’s all that really matters, right? What do you guys think?
BTW: No new Who next week!

Not entirely sure about that ten days thing - it seemed like the doctor just took her straight to the Hotel after the incident, but wasn’t clearly explained.
And. hey! If’n he did, it’s just another pre-destination paradox he gets mixed up in. Fun though they are, I feel it’s getting a little overdone.

Forgot to mention - posh people would probably say ‘Lavatory’ or ‘Loo’.

“C for Carrionites.”
That was funny.
Good episode. complex plot. I thought it was the Reverend just because i like to pick someone out at the beginning of mysteries based on 1st impressions and i guess i was right.
