Knitting…
When you think of knitting your first image is probably of little old ladies sitting around in rocking chairs and listening to Lawrence Welk on PBS. You may think of sweaters or socks, something really horrible you know you’re gonna get for Christmas and be forced to wear. But, how about a Dalek? Or how about the TARDIS? Or even better yet, the Fourth Doctor’s Scarf? Yes, knitting is not just for the older folks. Thanks to the internet there are an increasing number of younger people who are creating whole new patterns and ideas for things to knit. I myself took up knitting while I was recovering from an appendectomy earlier this year. I was making a half sized version of the scarf (with plans to make the full size version later). It’s fun, relatively easy, and not an expensive hobby.
Sadly though, the BBC seems to have a problem with this. Tech Dirt reported that since the BBC owns the copyright to Doctor Who, hobbyists who create their own patterns based on characters and such and upload them may find themselves forced to shut down. It’s a problem encountered among dalek builders as well. The BBC would rather fans not make replicas of their “intellectual property” (though they had no problems using fan built replicas of the console room and daleks for Curse of the Fatal Death).
