The Poison Sky Discussion…
Part two of the return of the Sontarans. This episode is mostly all action with just a little bit of Donna’s home life thrown in there. The Sontarans have succeeded in using the cars to poison the Earth’s atmosphere and the Doctor has to find a way to stop it before the gas reaches eighty percent capacity and wipes out all life on the planet.
And just before we get to the spoiler stuff… Way off topic I know, but I saw Iron Man today and it was freakin’ awesome. Seriously go see it and stay through the credits for a cool bit at the end.
Here be spoilers…
Okay, here was my biggest gripe with the whole episode. Seriously it bugged me enough to make me say, “What the hell?!” Wilf is stuck in the car with the gas going off and he’s locked inside. The Doctor and Donna are trying to get him out but to no avail. The Doctor whips out his sonic screwdriver to save the day. The same sonic screwdriver that can open doors, windows, repair barbed wire, blow up mine fields, scan for alien tech and life forms from miles away, weld wires, analyze DNA, light candles, pump up the volume of organs, boost rockets, make “super” phones, repair broken time vortex manipulators, stabilize oxygen fields, pop champagne corks, and who knows what all but the one thing it apparently can’t do, besides hack deadlock seals, is break glass windows. Donna’s mom has to come running with a hatchet to smash in the front windshield. This too got me wondering. England is quickly becoming known as “The Nanny State” and all, so why would they allow people to drive cars were the front windshield shatters into millions of pieces? Here in the States they have a plastic coating so when the window breaks it’s still held together. Or was this just shoddy writing and not knowing how cars are built?
Now I did enjoy the episode, but there were some problems I had with it. One was why the Sontarans kept having the nuclear missiles launch aborted if the missiles wouldn’t even scratch their paint. Martha pretty much has nothing to do, Donna cries again. Bernard Cribbins is wonderful as Wilf. He’s the first companion family member that you can just right off the bat like. I’m really looking forward to getting my copy of Dalek Invasion of Earth 2150 A.D. that Cribbins co-starred in. There’s a scene in which Donna has to use the TARDIS scanner and just as she’s pulling it towards her, for just a brief second, Rose is on the scanner calling for the Doctor. Brilliant! However, the best line of the episode goes to the Doctor. When everyone has to put on gas masks he turns and looks at Colonel Mace and says, “Are you my mummy?” I don’t know what was said afterwards because I was too busy laughing my butt off. I also loved how he didn’t put up with any of the sontarans’ crap. When Staal starts in on a diatribe, the Doctor switches the communications screen to a cartoon until Staal cools down a bit. Very funny. What do you guys think?
Next week: The Doctor’s Daughter (and is she a hottie…)

“One was why the Sontarans kept having the nuclear missiles launch aborted if the missiles wouldn’t even scratch their paint.”
This was explained actually. The Doctor mentions that because the “clone gas” is combustable the nukes would have ignited it. That’s why they didn’t wanna let earth launch their nukes.

The car was deadlocked, prat. The screwdriver broke glass in “The army of ghost”.

@ Olly
Then why not have the screwdriver break the windshield instead of mom with an ax? That was the whole point of my little diatribe.

Mum, axe, and the screwdriver can’t break the deadlocked windows.
Case in point: School Reunion, where the screwdriver can’t break the canisters open, but a laser from “the tin dog” can.

I choose to take this view:
He *could* have shattered the window. But doing so at such close range to Wilf would have caused the sonics to injure him, too.

YAY! Martha is back! sweet
anyways on to the show…i love the “Are you my mummy?” that was the 1st thing i thought of when i saw the colonel toss doc the mask. I also hated Donna wandering through the sontarian ship. She is just not Doctor Companion material. Its so frustrating…just do what the doctor tells you to do. he knows what hes doing your not going to die…actually maybe that would be better.

I kinda liked the Sontarrans personalities, they did fit the whole “Warrior Race” thing to a tea, I mean I saw one get shot and his reaction as he dies was “Magnificent”, that seemed like some good characterisation.
Oh yeah, and I reckon since they wouldn’t have built a fake car just to smash the windscreen that was just the model of vehicle. It didn’t like it was brand new safety glass ensured.
